Biomolecules

Chemical Analysis of Living Tissue

To study the chemical constituents of living tissues at first a sample of living tissue is taken in mortar and pestle along with  some Trichloroacetic acid and following procedure is followed :-
·
All the organic compounds  from the living organism is called – BIOMOLECULES (NCERT)
·         Wet Weight – Whole tissue weight
·         Dry Weight- Dehydrated tissue weight
·         Water content = Wet Weight – Dry Weight

Cellular Pool

·         Collection of different types of biomolecules and other chemical entities present in the cell is called cellular pool

Contents of cellular pool

1.       Organic Compounds
§  Carbohydrate
§  Proteins
§  Lipids
§  Other organic molecules
2.       Inorganic Compounds
§  Water
§  Na
§  K
§  Ca
§  Mg
§  Sulphate ions
§  Phosphate ions

Average composition of cells

Water
70-90%
Proteins
10-15%
Carbohydrate
3%
Lipid
2%
Nucleic Acids
5-7%
Ions

Biomolecules

·         Molecules of living origin
·         Can be classified in two types
1.       Micromolecules –
·         of simple structures
·         Mol. Wt. less than 1000da or between 18-800 da,
·         Present  in acid soluble pool
·         Used as monomers
2. Macromolecules –
·         Of complex structure
·         Mol.Wt. greater than 1000 da
·         Found in Acid insoluble pool
·         Normally polymers
